The substance whose thermal expansibility is required is used as a pillar to support a glass plate. The other side of the plate is supported by some standard substance, such as glass, quartz, or metal, of known expansibility. When temperature rises there is a differential expansion between the pillar and the standard substance. This expansion produces a movement of the interference fringes formed in the usual way between the glass plate and the surface of the standard. The peculiarity of the...

One of the most useful and at the same time least commonly used methods of thermal analysis for the determination of transformations in metals and alloys consists in the recording of the time intervals required for successive increments of temperature-change during heating or cooling, the temperature of the furnace which contains the specimen being altered at a uniform rate. For the measurement of the successive time intervals it is usual to employ a chronograph, the observer subsequently...

The usual types of permeameter do not permit the use of higher fields than about 300 c.g.s., whilst methods for high fields commonly require the use of small specimens. In view of these facts, a method has been developed for testing long straight bars in intense fields. The rod is passed axially through the flat pole-pieces of a Du Bois electromagnetwith an air-gap of 2 cm. Surrounding the rod in the air-gap are three short coaxial coils of fine wire which can be connected to a ballistic...
This paper records photographic measurements of wave lengths in the spectra of krypton and xenon, principally in the red and infra-red. In krypton 37 new lines were measured between ?6576 and ?8928; in xenon 52 new lines between ?6318 and ?9162. In this region there are numerous strong lines which are probably among the most important in the spectra of these elements. The xenon lines ?8231 and ?8280 are especially notable. These and other lines may be of value as wave-length standards in the...

The object of this paper is to give experimental data on atmospheric absorption as it affects the measurements of the radiation constants. The paper gives also a recalculation of the coefficient of total radiation of a uniformly heated enclosure, taking into consideration all losses by reflection from the receivers, as well as losses by atmospheric absorption. The value of the coefficient obtained is ? = (5.722±0.012)×10/sup -12/ watt cm./sup -2/ deg./sup -4/, which is the same as previously...

This paper presents a method of analysis by means of which it is possible to design a circuit to obtain max. output from a given valve, or, conversely, to select a valve which will furnish with reasonable efficiency its max. power to a particular output circuit. It is shown how the power characteristics of a valve may be obtained from the Hazeltine derived characteristic. These power characteristics are then applied to determine the current output in a circuit of known capacity and resistance....
Gives a simple method for computing spectral energy curves, using the Planck radiation formula. In order to facilitate the computations, a table of values of log (e/sup n/-1) is given. By means of this table, a table of logarithms and a slide rule, the author states that a complete spectral energy curve cart be computed in an hour. A chart is given for comparing the thermal radiation constants with similar data obtained directly from theoretical considerations, using Planck's constant h and...

This paper describes in detail the apparatus and method of operation for reliable determinations of spectral transmission throughout the green, blue and violet by a photographic null method. The arrangement of apparatus is essentially the same as that used by Richtmyer [Abs. 1915A01639], but adapted to the needs of spectrophotometry. The apparatus has been in continual use since April, 1918, and has proved very satisfactory. All errors have been eliminated, as well as the necessity of anytests,...

It is pointed out that according to Nernst's equation the potential of the manganese peroxide electrode should be a logarithmic function of the hydrogen-ion concentration. Experiments were therefore made on manganese peroxide electrodes, using various kinds of ore, and their potential was measured in ammonium chloride solution with various hydrogen-ion concentrations. It was found that the law held in the case of mixtures of graphite and some manganese ores, but that the potential of similar...

The object of the present paper is to give data on the reflecting power of the latest production of stellite and also of lacquered silver mirrors. It is shown that the reflectivity of stellite varies somewhat in the visible spectrum depending upon the homogeneity and no doubt upon the exact composition of the alloy [see Abs. 1918A01156]. Data are given on the reflecting power of lacquered silver mirrors, before and after exposure to ultra-violet light. It is shown that owing to photochemical...

The use of direction-finders for aircraft having been carried to a very satisfactory conclusion at the Naval Air Station, Hampton Roads, Va., on a wave-length of 2500 m., it seemed desirable to ascertain if it might be possible to utilise for aeroplane direction-finder work, in the case of extremely long flights, the existing high-power stations in Europe, which operate on continuous waves of lengths between 8000 and 20,000 m. Experiments were made with the two-coil maximum method and the...
